Expectations of House League Coaches.

We all start wanting to be a good coach. What do I have to do? What is expected? These are all good questions.

Pre-Game Prep

  • Prepare a game sheet with the players names on them

  • XXXX add link to blank game sheets XXXXX

  • Review technical drills provided by the technical director prior to practices/games, and ask the technical director any questions at least a day before the practice session.

  • Be at the soccer center or soccer field 10 min prior to game

  • If you want, invite all parents to download and accept your invite for TeamSnap

  • Send out a text message or TeamSnap message to remind parents of soccer the day before - they will appreciate it.

What to do

  • If at the soccer centre, hand in your keys at the concession and get the key to your change room (Location is on the white board beside the concession). Open it up and greet your players.

  • Get the players warming up - 2 half-field laps dribbling a ball in each direction will help.

  • Setup drills while players warm up.

  • Play all players equally re time on field

  • Every player learns and plays every position

  • Thank the Referees and the other coaches after each game

How to do it

  • Encourage by celebrating what was done well, not criticize

  • Ask them if they can do “X” next time (constructive) not criticize for doing “y”

  • Give feedback that is specific, not “good job”

  • Always look for what was done right, point it out to the the team, and reinforce it with praise to the individual.

  • Show respect for each player

  • Expect and insist on respect from the players

  • Teach them proper etiquette by example
